Growing cress with little ones

For us, spring is always a time for colourful creations. While craft ideas tend to take on a more earthy colour in autumn, we use colourful early blooms to bring bright and creative ideas to life in spring.

Edible Easter egg faces

Easter is a key time for this. What does your Easter table look like? Do you use traditional decorations, or are they colourful and perhaps even edible? Today I'm going to show you how to grow cute, edible Easter egg faces in just a few days. You will need:

- garden cress

- soil

- eggs in an egg carton

Try to empty the eggs carefully into a bowl without breaking too much of the shell. Ideally use an egg cutter. Once you have emptied all of the eggs, dip the shells briefly in some water and vinegar to clean them a little.

Now your little gardeners can fill the eggshells to the brim with soil. They will love this! Now it's time for the cress seeds. Make sure that they are spread out over the soil so that the seeds have room to germinate and grow.

You can then hold the eggshells under a gentle trickle of water and water them a little every day. The soil should always be a bit damp so that the seeds can germinate within 3 days. The cress leaves will start to appear after around 5-6 days. Kids will love watching the seeds daily as they sprout and grow into cress. Each morning, they can check their cress Easter eggs and look for signs of new growth.

To draw the faces, we recommend using an acrylic pen so that the colour doesn't fade when watering. The children can choose whether to decorate their eggs with faces, spots or other patterns.

We like the simple version and we decorate the table with colourful cherry or quince blossom.

We look forward to seeing all the different little faces on our Easter table. After Easter, we enjoy the cress with a delicious slice of bread and butter or we pop it in a salad. Alternatively, we use it to make these cream cheese balls. Cress will add a peppery note to any dish.

Have fun being creative and eating the cress!
